Jed Beaton of Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing came very close to overall victory during the penultimate round of the MX2 world championships at Arco di Trento in Italy. Beaton was third overall with second and fourth in the motos respectively, but only two points short of overall victory. Thomas Kjer Olsen suffered crashes in both heats, but recovered to sixth and eighth respectively.
The track at Arco di Trento was barely changed from Sunday’s GP, which meant that the riders were on familiar ground. Olsen used is track knowledge to claim pole position, and Beaton featured strongly with the fourth qualifying.
Beaton started best in the opening heat, slotting into tenth spot early on. He immediately went on the attack, and within the space of a lap, he was in second position. By then, the race leader had cleared off, and the pace was just to high for Beaton to launch an attack. He concentrated on holding second, which he managed to do. Olsen had a middling start and crashed early on. He built up a good rhythm, and contained the damage by racing to sixth.
Olsen had a better start in race two and pushed through to third. Another crash dropped him far back, though, and again he had to play catch up. He gave it his all, and got to eighth, giving him seventh overall for the day. Beaton had a chance to go for the overall win. He rode strongly in fourth place, but third was needed to secure victory. He just did not get to making the pass, which turned a potential overall victory into a still creditable third place.
Jed is currently fourth in the world standings, 13 points behind third. Olsen is currently in fifth place, a further 11 points behind. The teammates will be going all out to improve on their positions at the final GP of the season at the same track on Sunday.
