Thomas Kjer Olsen of Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing secured his second successive MX2 GP victory at Mantova in Italy. Olsen took the lead in the last lap of the first race to win the heat, and followed that up with a second in the final race, giving him the overall victory. Jed Beaton was also in the fight for a podium spot, but a crash ruined all chances of that.
Both riders had recovered well after the first round of the triple header last weekend. The track had some slight changes, and Jed qualified third, just 0.376 seconds off pole. Thomas qualified in sixth spot which was enough for a good gate position.
Olsen dropped into proceedings in fifth spot in race one, with Jed a few spots behind. Olsen quickly worked his way up inside of the top three, and with a few laps to go, had the leader in sight. In the last lap, he took the lead in hand, and went for the win. Jed had some trouble moving forward, but still manged to get to sixth.
The riders launched off the line in reverse order in the second race, with Jed having the better start and with the leaders this time. Thomas worked hard to get the leading group in sight, and finally fought his way to second, which gave him the GP victory. Jed was in second spot until mid-race distance, with an overall podium in sight. A small crash ruined that for him, as he finished sixth in the heat and also for the GP.
Jed is still in fourth spot in the world standings and Thomas in a strong sixth place. The action continues on Sunday at the same track.
